Dorothy and Dog Koshka-Mashka

Koshka-Mashka was rescued by Katya (dog shelter) on October 20, 2003. She was tiny, just a few days old, and the vet didn't think she'd make it. But despite all odds, she survived and grew into a beautiful, fluffy and good-natured dog.

For years no one showed much interest in her, but in 2008 that changed: Dorothy, a dog-lover living in the U.S., was browsing the photos on the Moscow Animals web site and fell in love with Koshka-Mashka.

After a few email exchanges with a Moscow Animals volunteer to find out more about Koshka-Mashka's personality, Dorothy made the decision to adopt the dog. In early January 2009, Koskha-Mashka flew to the U.S. with Moscow Animals volunteer Isabelle Kaplan and her own adopted Russian dogs.

The journey would not have been possible without the enormous help of veterinarians Yury and Valeria Shishmaryov, who prepared all the necessary paperwork and donated their time to accompany Koshka to the airport to make sure everything went according to plan.

When the flight was delayed leaving Moscow, Valeria stuck around. Of course, since she has been helping people transport their pets for so many years, Valeria knows just about everyone who works at Moscow's airports - from porters to baggage handlers to customs officials. So she spent a lot of the waiting time catching up with her colleagues!

Koshka-Mashka's adjustment to her new home in New York has been quick and seamless - she gets along well with her new siblings (cat Pachelbel and dog Daisy), loves Central Park, and enjoys window shopping on Madison Avenue.

After five years of waiting, little Koshka-Mashka has discovered what Dorothy has known all along -- there's no place like home.

If you're considering adopting a dog through Moscow Animals, go for it! It's not as complicated as you might think, and Moscow Animals can hook you up with the help and resources you need.
